Orange peel grapples are gripping devices made up of a central frame on which 3 to 6 teeth are hinged. Each tine is moved by an independent hydraulic cylinder. All cylinders are connected to a single hydraulic circuit, which coordinates the opening and closing of the tines. Thanks to this conformation, when closing, all the teeth work with the same pressure force, although each of them can stop in a different position. For this reason, polyp grapples provide a firm grip on irregularly shaped objects, making them the most effective tool for handling loose materials such as scrap metal, municipal solid waste, industrial waste, production waste, paper, cardboard, plastic, firewood and tyres. Scrap grabs are also suitable for collecting scrap cars, large stones and boulders. The teeth, or jaws, come in three different shapes, depending on the width: closed, semi-closed (standard), and open. Standard tines are the most versatile, open tines are used for loading loose material and closed tines are for handling fine grained material. The geometry of the grapple derives from years of experience and is designed to guarantee maximum penetration into stacked materials and maximum load capacity.

Orange peel grapples, such as grab buckets, log grapples, kerbstone grapples and hydraulic forks, should be mounted to the running machine by a universal joint that allows oscillation in the longitudinal and lateral direction ("pendulum" style). This differentiates them from sorting and demolition grapples, which are instead mounted to the excavator arm via a rigid connection system.

S-jaws for sorting. Demolition and sorting grapples with plate-reinforced S-jaws are designed for recycling applications. Loose material does not stick so easily between the ribs. The jaws are very strong and are also suitable for demolition applications.

A demolition grapple does just what its name says: it grabs hold of scrap and debris and moves it out of the way, deftly handling a myriad of materials, from rebar to insulation.

The stone grab attachment on the excavator can be used to shift large stones, rocks, and scrap. Due to its sharp tines and cutting edges on the front, the mechanical grab can dig deep into the scrap in order to fully load the inner space of the grapple.
